Beginnings

This site is based on research which started in December 2003 after I first read 'The Wind on the Downs' and was so moved by it that I wanted to know more about its author. At the time nothing was known about Arthur and little about Marian except that she was the author of 'The Wind on the Downs'. I am particularly grateful for the help given by: Rusty Maclean (Rugby School archivist) Caroline Hill (Quarry Bank Mill archivist) Elizabeth Gough (Thornton Heath researcher) Brian Street (Croydon researcher) Jon Armstrong(WW1 researcher) Ann Spokes Symonds (Oxford social historian)

There are now some Marian Allen photographs at www.flickr.com added by Grimjimjar

Arthur's gripping account of his experiences near Ypres in April/May 1915,ending when he was badly wounded when part of his jaw was shot away, can be found on pages 37 to 48 of Col. Arthur Crookenden's,'History of the Cheshire Regiment in the Great War'.

Dedicated to Marian Allen, whose moving poem known as 'The Wind on the Downs' tells of her love for Captain Arthur Tylston Greg shot down near St.Quentin on April 23rd,1917
